My path to becoming a committed photographer began, I
suspect, as a boy thumbing through a household copy of The Family of Man. The time
I spent in the pages of that book later compelled me to explore the master
works of 19th and 20th century photographers, and when finally
I began to frame the world through the viewfinder of my own camera, this youthful
stirring only deepened with each release of the shutter.
My first camera was a Nikkormat, a gift from a sister in 1973. Over the years I acquired finer cameras and lenses, built a couple of darkrooms, and habitually seized quiet hours and weekends to photograph and print images as family and career permitted. Slowly, inexorably, I became more accomplished and found small galleries to exhibit and sell my work. Today it’s the same: I study and practice the craft, derive satisfaction in rendering a successful image, and take genuine delight in sharing my work with others. While photography is a demanding and contemplative endeavor, it’s also been a splendid adventure and joyous form of personal expression!
